The start to the new year has been an interesting one for both Kendal United’s First and Reserve Teams. After the usual post-Christmas weather postponements both senior teams returned to action and hit the ground running where the First Team eased into the Semi Finals of The County Cup after they defeated Staveley Utd 6-0.
The manner of the win while against a struggling opponent was impressive as they now prepare for a huge semi-final game against Appleby. Interestingly the first team also played Appleby in The Benevolent Trophy Quarter Finals at Castle Drive this weekend in another big game, with Kendal winning on penalties against an opponent who defeated Kendal Town in the County Cup a few weeks ago.
However while being in contention for two cup competitions the teams league form has somewhat faltered in recent weeks although they are sixth in the table. The last league game ended in defeat losing 2-1 at Freckleton which is never an easy place to go, Freckleton were 2-0 up a half time before Bailey Kenny pulled one back on the 60th minute but despite the team’s best efforts they were unable to take something from a really close game.
So overall the first team are in a good place despite some mixed results in the league they do have two Westmorland Cup competitions to compete for as they look to continue their good season.
As for the reserves 2022 started on a winning note where they defeated Windermere 4-1 in the Mason & Freeman Cup. However a repeat of last season’s Junior Cup final saw Kendal Utd bow out in the quarter finals losing 2-1 to Greystoke at Castle Drive. Greystoke were a good team but United pushed them throughout in a really good game and an excellent advert for Westmorland football.
As for the league we are down in tenth place but have games in hand and are only nine points behind second making it a really close division. In truth the reserves league position isn’t a true reflection as they haven’t played a league game since early December.
However games come thick and fast from this weekend as they play every weekend starting at Burneside on Saturday before another away game at Ibis Reserves one week later.
